It is common for honeybees to leave and start a new colony elsewhere. They usually look for a sheltered place, like a hollow log or hole in a tree. This colony went feral and built fully exposed hanging from a branch. Needless to say, as soon as the cold came, animals destroyed the hive when the bees were too cold to defend it.
