Behind The Lens

Location

This rainbow lorikeet was a resident of the Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard, Kansas which is pretty unique because there are multiple interactive exhibits.

Time

This picture was taken in the mid morning and it must have been snack time for this lorikeet since it was quite interested in the food I had as part of the interactive exhibit.

Lighting

This picture was taken during the mid morning on a pretty sunny day and I was worried about the light washing out the colors some so this shot involved a fair bit of luck with the shadows from the foliage and the sunlight.

Equipment

This was shot on a Rebel T5i with an EFS 55-250mm IS lens. My settings were: f/6.3, IS0 640, 1/250s, 200mm (320mm equivalent). I also had a small bit of honey and nectar used to feed the birds which helped to get their attention. They will land on you in order to eat it which makes that exhibit a lot more fun!

Inspiration

Both my spouse and I grew up with a love for animals and going to the zoo so we make a point of going to the zoo whenever we get the chance. I find that the zoo is a great way to practice all kinds of photography skills given the range of environments, lighting, limited viewing angles, etc, and this was a unique chance to get up close to the animals without having to work around a fence.

Editing

I do not know how to do much of any post processing so I just crop and do some slight color corrections. It is on my list of things to learn though!

In my camera bag

Most of the time I am taking photos I am on the move for hours (on a hike, at the zoo, etc) so I typically just have my EFS 55-250mm lens as an 'all around' lens. It's been by go to for lens for several years.

Feedback

Zoo photography is a great way to get some fantastic animal portraits and practice! I've found the most success by going during the week and using the longer range of my telephoto lens.
