A close up shot of the endangered Southern African Ground Hornbill, Bucorvus leadbeateri. This is the largest species of hornbill and it can grow to a height of 90 to 129cm (36 to 51 inches). A breeding female lays two 15.5cm long eggs, called Cain & Abel. Once hatched, the stronger of the two chicks (Cain) kills the smaller chick (Abel), so as to receive sole benefit from the parents care. Whenever possible, the Pretoria Zoo rescues all the Abel chicks and sends them to various conservation centers to be reared. These birds are then released back into the wild.
