Location
I shot this photo in Denver, Colorado back in 2016.Time
This one was an evening shoot, right around sunset. I needed to have some kind of hard light source to create the shadows but not as overhead or unflattering as the midday sun.Lighting
This one's all natural light. The sunset is strong enough to serve as hard light and really pop the shadows. The lines that you see, the shadows themselves, are being created by a wooden drape set that I had pinned vertically to a light stand. A bit unconventional, but it definitely did what I wanted it to.Equipment
D750, 85mm lens, available light.Inspiration
I was shooting glamour at the time, but even so I've always been a portrait photographer first. That means expression in the face above all else. I was looking to experiment with some different kind of lighting options so I brought a bundle of stuff with me from home. The blinds that I pinned vertical were pretty obviously the right choice as soon as I set them up. It was just a matter of finding and creating flattering shadows.Editing
Yes, though not as much as one might think. Basic retouching in Photoshop on this one (minor skin work, general levels, a very small amount of color toning to maintain the warm look). In my camera bag
I have a Nikon D750, an 85mm, and a 50mm lens. That's it. I shoot with available light, so I'm not currently working with any kind of strobes or flash equipment.Feedback
You've got to think outside the box. If you see something awesome that you really like, by all means be inspired by it. But take that inspiration and make it your own. Brainstorm ways to be inspired without copying someone else. Find images that you love and work to understand what you love about them. Use all the information at your disposal and be genuine when you shoot. Bring your vision and concept to life, or at least try your very best to do so.
