Behind The Lens

Location

This was a session that I shot along the Stones River in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

Time

We planned this excursion later in the afternoon so that we could capture the warmth of golden hour.

Lighting

While the ambient light was magical, I chose to light the model with a Paul C Buff Einstein strobe (camera left), with a 22” white beauty dish for a modifier.

Equipment

Einstein 640 strobe w/ 22” white beauty dish, Vagabond Lithium battery pack, Sekonic L-358 light meter, Nikon D800, Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR II lens

Inspiration

This was a collaborative effort between the model and myself

Editing

I did very little post processing. I adjusted the curves and some minor dodge / burn to bring out the background.

In my camera bag

In my bag you’ll find 1-2 DSLR bodies. I currently shoot Nikon, so I rely on a D810 as my main camera, and a D800 as a secondary. Lenses consist of a 70-200mm f2.8 VR II, 16-35mm f4 VR, 28- 70mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8G, 105mm f1.4E.

Feedback

Timing is very key for environmental portraits. A little prior planning and knowing your location can make for a dynamic experience.
