Behind The Lens

Location

I’ve always wanted to be a photographer, but my career went in another direction. In October 2017, I started an online iPhone photography class but couldn’t seem to find time to take many photos. So when I went home to Florida for Christmas, I took my neice to her ballet studio and started snapping away. I gained more knowledge (and made more mistakes) in that one session than I could ever hope for!

Time

It was the perfect day! Overcast and warm. There was a big window in the studio with beautiful light pouring in. My neice kept turning the studio lights on, and I kept turning them off!

Lighting

I am still in the middle of my online editing course, so my skills are limited. But I used vignettes to create more dramatic lighting effects. I normally don’t like vignettes, but I experimented with moving them around, some halfway off the page, and loved the effect I was getting.

Equipment

iPhone 7 camera. I started out with a tripod, and tried to compose, angle, not shake, etc. But I got the best pictures when I just held it in my hand, scooted around the floor, and gave up worrying about technical details.

Inspiration

My beautiful neice inspired me. I also got inspired as we went along. Not being very confident, I got excited when I reviewed the pictures every few shots and saw they might have a chance!

Editing

I used Snapseed only to edit. Mostly brightening, vignetting and working on saturation to keep it soft.

Feedback

Get up close and personal! My model was spectacular, but she was nervous, too, as I was asking her to pose. Finally, I told her “let’s quit posing. You just go through your normal warmup and practice session and don’t even pay attention to me.” Of course, sometimes I was right up on her face or hanging upside down or getting under her shoes! But we both got comfortable which made all the difference. At times, I would ask her to do something again or “hold it right there.”
