Behind The Lens
Location
Both photographer and model are students at Central Michigan University - the duo decided to take advantage of the university's greenhouse during a particularly unbecoming day. The glass of the greenhouse was fogging on the inside and freezing on the outside, lending an almost ghostly feel to the background.Time
This photo was taken a Friday morning before the sun reached its peak. Michigan winters may be harsh, but that doesn't stop the sun from returning that intensity. In an attempt to avoid clipped highlights, the photographer chose a day with a significant cloud cover.Lighting
Returning to the statement about the greenhouse glass, the ice and condensation worked together to filter sunlight into a beautifully soft ambient light source that reduced shadows from the subject and allowed enough detail in the background to make the photograph more intriguing. The light enables the viewer to see both the cacti and plants native to arid climates as well as the pine tree through the window, which gives the sense the subject has been displaced.Equipment
Camera: Canon Rebel t5i Lens: 50mm F/1.8 fixedInspiration
The model, Emily, had just sat down and was working with different poses when she made the decision to muss her hair with her hands. The emotion portrayed, even by her hidden face and how it was captured, was not simply my own work in the slightest. The resulting photo is a collaborative capture between subject and photographer.Editing
I used a single raw image, lowering highlights to give an eerie and intimate view of the subject. Her oneness, her comfort, her connection to her surroundings, would have been lessened by anything more intense than simple toning. In my camera bag
I can't be caught without my kit lens. Four years with that baby and counting. As a college student in an unassuming town, it's difficult to buy efficient lenses and find beautiful places - much less travel to them. I work with three lenses: 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6, 50mm F/1.8, and 55-250 F/4.0-5.6. They challenge me to improve myself constantly and discover new ways to stabilize my camera in low-light situations.Feedback
Do the ugly environment challenge. Nothing will help your eye more. It's true this environment was anything but ugly, but being able to find the best in the worst will help you find the best in the best. Elevate yourself to your own standards in bad situations so you can excel past your standards in ideal situations.
