Location
This photo was taken by never on a hunting farm in Limpopo, South Africa. I was wondering around in a Land Rover Discovery, just looking at the veld, ( bush) while my husband was doing electrical Work on one of the chalets. On passing a small dam, I noticed a pod of Hippo on the other side.Time
It was about 11 am by the time I arrived at the dam and the hippo were very lady, but don't be fooled, they can change speed and mood in a flash of a eye. I drove up onto the wall for a better look and I remembered that the owner had told me to bang on the side of the Landy and they will come over to investigate. A bit scary as they could have charged me and pushed me off the wall, but hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.Lighting
It was a typical summers day in sunny South Africa, deep blue sky, no wind, crystal clear air.Equipment
This was shot with a Cannon D100 with a Sigma 600 lens. I used a bean bag on the window, can't get out by hippo.Inspiration
I was actually looking for an awesome burd picture, but could not pass up the opportunity to get one of the hippo. I was very excited to be on my own, just taking time in the stillness of the Africa bush. This photo represents me in my quiet time.Editing
I did not change the picture in any way, what you see is as it it. Two reasons for this. I am an old school photographer and definitely not of the age were I would even know how to do post- anything.NormallyIn my camera bag
Normally I have obe bag with the Canon D100 with the 600 lens and another bag with the Canon D1200 with a 300 Sigma lens.Feedback
The best time in this environment is early morning. The dew sits on the long grass and gives off the most awesome colours. Animal photography takes loads of patience and you need to make sure you are prepared to sit for hours fir the right shot. We are very fortunate in South Africa, as we have these farms and wild life reserves close to us.
