Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken out in the west desert of Utah. It's hard to say the exact location since it took about two hours of driving on dirt roads and a lot of "should we turn here?" to find this spot.

Time

It was about 2 pm when the picture was taken. When ever I go out to the west desert, I just drive around on the dirt roads taking random turns and just wonder until something catches the eye.

Equipment

I was using the DJI Mavicpro drone. I was around four hundred feet up in the air with the camera angled straight down at the road.

Inspiration

As I was driving up the road to the top of the mountain I could tell from all the curves and colors of the road that I needed to fly my drone in that direction.

Editing

I like using the LightRoom mobile app. I have never been formally trained in editing so I play around with the different options. I knew when I saw the raw image I needed to bring out the red in the road and blueish purple in the trees.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sony A100 DSRL, along with my macro lens and wide angle lens. My DJI Mavicpro drone also goes every where with me. I usually have three batteries for the drone and the car charger. I don't carry a lot of gear. I find that it challenges me to be more creative and try different angle and views.

Feedback

Drones are fun because they allow you to experiment with different angles and different heights. Find a key feature, like a road or river and play with where it runs through the photo. Either in the center or to a side and mix up the height of the drone.
