Behind The Lens

Location

I was visiting my family in Palestine and every time I go there, I go visit places and take pictures of the homeland. This was Al Ajami Masjid (mosque) in Yafa/Jaffa, northern Palestine/Israel, it's an old Masjid (mosque) 1800's that was renovated and Muslims use it for their daily worship. It felt so peaceful, I prayed there before I took any pictures.

Time

This image was taken in the early afternoon, I was able to get there in the early afternoon and tour around to see Yafa/Jaffa and explore the old Palestinian city and when I got to this Masjid, I had to go in and see, pray and take pictures. I was fascinated by the old craftsmanship of my people and had to take several pictures of that Masjid.

Lighting

I'm glad it was a sunny day, I think it was about 15:00 which was great for taking pictures in the shade. The ability to take good exposure was just right, I didn't need a tripod for that.

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D. My 14mm wide angle was too wide it wasn't going to work right for this shot as I wanted it so I used my 50mm lens and didn't need a tripod for that.

Inspiration

I'm trying to document people and places in my homeland and show the reality of my people. We know how the media talks about and tries to show the Palestinian people in a very negative way. I will do my best to show our culture, happiness, sorrow and the well to live in peace. This city had its fare share of problems, several years ago, one minaret was bombed by an Israeli right wing religious group, so I feel that every place should be documented with the hope it will stay and get to be experienced and enjoyed.

Editing

I didn't do any processing, this was digital and I shoot raw so I make sure my exposure is right and I take several shots with different sittings and see after I get done which is best for what I need and if need be, I will take other shots if I can an have time.

In my camera bag

I have Canon 6D, 14mm, f2.8, 50mm f1.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 lenses as well as the Canon SPEEDLITE 430EX II flash, tripod and monopod.

Feedback

My advice is be respectful, listen and follow what people say to you, be friendly and smile. When it comes to exposure, you should look at the place, the angle, the light and think about your exposure, you might not have much time and in that case you need to be fast but aware of your camera sittings and exposure before you click.
