This beautiful color palette was formed deep underground when hydrothermal systems interacted with volcanic rocks to create extremely concentrated mineral deposits. It marks one of Death Valley's most violently explosive volcanic periods. And yes...these colors really are present in this one concentrated area. The iron compounds produce the reds, pinks and yellows. Magnese produces the purples and the decomposition of Mica produces the greens, aquas.
