Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the famous Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. It's a photographer's dream for people who are interested in historical estates and the Gilded Age of economic growth and industrial development. The house was built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States at 178,926 square feet of floor space.

Time

This picture was taken in the afternoon, when the Estate was at its busiest. It took us a few hours to get through the house because it is enormous, but the number of photo opportunities along the way made it worthwhile.

Lighting

I feel the natural light streaming through the windows in the house served a lot of the photos I took very well, especially with this image and the image of the Winter Garden.

Equipment

Camera: NIKON D7100 Aperture: 7/2 ISO: 1000 Shutter Speed: 1/125 Focal Length: 18/1

Inspiration

We were standing at the top of the staircase looking down and it occurred to me that this was a rather unique perspective at which I could capture the chandelier. It took a bit of waiting for the stairs to clear out but in the end I managed to get a few shots.

Editing

Post-processing for this image was fairly minimal thanks to the natural lighting. All I did was brighten it up a little and sharpen it.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D7100, an AF-S Nikkor 18-105 mm lens, and an AF-S Nikkor 55-300 mm lens. I tend to travel pretty light with equipment.

Feedback

Patience is a virtue! It took a while for the staircase to clear, but in the end the wait was worth it. Sometimes the difference between a good picture and a great picture is an extra few minutes spent making sure the space is free of distractions.
