Location
I took this photo in Zion National Park, in Utah. I was crossing the road from the trail to the Emerald pools back to the lodge. Zion has always been one of my favorite places to visit.Time
I was on my way back from hiking to Middle Emerald pool and I had just crossed the river to the road, it was about 3:00pm in the afternoon. The road had no cars and it looked like a great shot, so I took it.Lighting
It was late afternoon and summer so the sun was still very bright, producing hard shadows from the trees behind me.Equipment
I was using a Nikon L28 full spectrum converted camera with an 860nm infrared filter over the lens.Inspiration
I had been suing my DSLR on my hike, but I had put it back in may backpack after taking photos of the Emerald pools. I had my L28 point and shoot around my neck and this the scene cought my eye while crossing the road and I just snapped it. Being in the middle of road on a busy summer day you cannot set any equipment for a planed shot, so this was just a lucky shot.Editing
The only post processing was done in Lightroom where I converted it from a reddish tinted photo to a black and white image.In my camera bag
I usually carry my Nikon D750, 24-120mm f/4 lens, Nikon 50mm f1.4 prime and a Nikon 85mm f/1.8 prime lens. I carry set of graduated and regular neutral density filters along with a carbon fiber light weight tripod.Feedback
If you want to try infrared photography but don't want to sped a bunch of money go with a small converted point and shoot camera, you can usually pick one up for between $150-$300.00. These do not allow you much post processing ability because most give you jpeg images, but it's a good way to see if you really like IR (infrared) photography or not. If you decide you really like it than you can have one your older DSLRs converted or buy one converted. Several compaines do IR conversions and even have converted ones available for sale. Models vary as well as price, most of the main camera brands are available, Nikon, Sony, Canon and so on.
