The Dutch are enormously innovative when the objective is to prevent water from entering their land. They have built dams, fortifications and, finally, without subtracting an iota of importance, windmills and water to create new lands. The oldest mill is a water mill dating from the eighth century. Pumping techniques were used to drain hundreds of lakes and marshes and to prevent the lands from being flooded. At present, windmills are characteristic of the Dutch landscape and are a symbol of the struggle that the country maintains with water.
