Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the northern part of Weston County about eight miles outside of Newcastle, WY. In an area that gets buried in snow come winter.

Time

It was one of those spur of the moment idea to take a drive and find something to photograph. It was about 1:00 p.m. and the sun was going to the backside of the mountain.

Lighting

Nothing special other than Natural light.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L lens. Handheld shot.

Inspiration

I love rust and old trucks! There was this old truck with the old wood bed still attached to it and all these old tractors around it. We went and knocked in the owner’s house door to ask permission to photograph it and they graciously said, “sure go ahead”. Told us a little history and we went and photographed it.

Editing

Yes, in Photoshop to play with the shadows, light, clarity, and dehaze. I also took out some of the background by cropping out a shop and modern vehicles.

In my camera bag

I usually carry two cameras, Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon Dx, several canon lenses: 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f2.8L, and a 85mm, a Varied ND Lens.

Feedback

I am not a professional photographer by far. That being said, I try to follow advice from those I am learning from. Some of the best advice from of my instructors, was to go out and observe the light, how does it fall, what does it look like from all different angles, and shoot photos, play around with your settings, in doing so you learn how to make decisions as to how to photograph your subjects. Always strive to improve and the more you shoot the better you will get.
