A 1977 Malibu Classic sits in the snow, covered with snow on a brick paved street in Urbana, Illinois. The American auto industry had previously only made big, obese, unwieldy gas guzzlers and muscle cars, possibly a reflection of the opulence and decadence of the American society. The advent of foreign car makers from Europe and Japan at significantly higher quality standards exposed the American Auto industry and forced changes for the better.

Cars manufactured towards the end of the 1970s therefore showed a departure form the excessives of the previous generations, albeit not all of them.
