Location
This photo was taken in a forest close to my home, in the southern of France.Time
First, when I saw in this cloudy morning a ray of soft sunny light, I just KNEW I wanted to go out for a shooting. But nobody to drive me to the location I had spotted few days ago ( not so easy every day when you don’t have your driving license yet ) so I just spend my frustration in the woods, where my parents have a large enclosure for their wild boar breeding. Hector ( yes, it’s his name ) came straight to me, running, with a gorgeous back light when he stopped in front of me, in a such “wild attitude”. That’s when I took this photo, on the 30 November 2017, around 11 am.Lighting
It's quite impossible to make stand a wild animal... I just had the chance that Hector decides to stay few minutes in the perfect way to have a nice lighting !Equipment
The Canon 7D Mark II + 50mm 1.8 from Yongnuo.Inspiration
Definitively the strength and charisma that Hector releases ! I tried to transcribe the feeling I have when he's in front of me. It's so impressive, you fell very small next to him !Editing
Yes, I did. Some basic things first : a little bit of contrast, some green desaturation, a bit more of exposition... Then I wanted to add a dark mood on this photo, to accentuate the powerful side of this picture. So I added a large vignette, then brushed on the Hector's head and back, to recover the light there was on it. Finally, I added a beam of light behind him, to create a more special atmosphere. In my camera bag
Always my beloved Canon 7D Mark II body, which is just perfect for animal photography, with my 50mm most of the time, I like the bokeh, and the proximity I can have with my "models", which are often dogs. I take also my 70-300mm Tamron, but I don't use it that much, just when the subject is too far for the 50mm. So only 2 lens with 1 camera body. And a looot of dog treats !Feedback
I know that everyone doesn't have the chance to have a wild boar breeder in their family, but I think that you can easily solve this problem by finding a wild life park or something like that near you. The secret is to wake up early, that's when you have the better chance to see the animals in activity, and a nice lighting too... Without forgetting that there will be fewer people. A such interesting thing in animal photography is that we cannot predict or even impose something to the animal, which will always stay natural and true ! Just let them take you to their world !
