Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken along Highway 24 near Buena Vista, Colorado in December, 2017. The backdrop is the Collegiate Peaks.

Time

It was taken early morning around 9am.

Lighting

Shooting this in the early morning with low angle sun allowed for deep contrasts and sharply cut shadows.

Equipment

Shot in natural light with Nikon D40 using a 200mm zoom. I rested the camera on a fence to eliminate any shake.

Inspiration

This was actually a random find since I had first pulled over to shoot something across the highway. Then when I looked back and saw this, I thought 'wow!' I was most attracted by the light and shadow patterns and the overall old, abandoned look set against the snowcapped mountains. It was complemented by the barren trees in December.

Editing

After converting to black & white I pushed the contrast and lowered the highlights slightly.

In my camera bag

50mm lens, 200mm zoom lens, fisheye lens extension, sun shade lens hood.

Feedback

Always take in a 360 view, wherever you are. The best shot may be a different subject or angle than you originally intended. Think about framing and visual interest when composing the shot.
