Behind The Lens

Location

I participated in a Meet-Up group for Cosplay Set Design, it was hosted by Bret Cain Studio in Denver Colorado. Turns out the participation was limited to just Bret and myself. I enjoyed the process of designing and fabricating a Steampunk set with the intent of creating stylized photography shoot opportunities. My woodshop, woodworking skills, and creative energy was put to use. I was fortunate to have recruited some great models who brought fantastic wardrobes and one result of that shoot is what you see in this photograph. This is a great example of broad creative opportunity. Multiple people contributing to the creative process.

Time

This could have been any time of day considering it was in studio. That said, we met on a Saturday with the models and enjoyed a rather non-constrained creative process.

Lighting

In studio light is where you control the light. I brought Profoto strobes and softening modifiers to the set. Hard to miss when the set looks great, the models are experienced, the wardrobe is fantastic and appropriate, the camera and settings are properly chosen, and the post processing is appropriately tooled and utilized.

Equipment

Shooting with Canon 5D mark iii with a Sigma Art 85mm prime lens. Using dual Profoto B1X strobes and Profoto light modifiers.

Inspiration

I was fortunate to participate in an activity to conceive and visualize a very stylized background set, in this case a Steampunk themed background. I was able to incorporate workworking and other creative medium that resulted in the background for the shoot. How fun to get some great models with fabulous and appropriate wardrobe. This was truly a collective effort.

Editing

I use Capture One for initial processing as needed. I then use Photoshop for any more technical adjustments. No presets here. All adjustments made just to bring the photography to the point of Wow while avoiding over-processing. My goal in photography is to Wow. To keep the images within reality but strive for dazzling the viewer.

In my camera bag

Canon 5D Mark iii, Profoto Air Remote, Canon 50mm f/1.4 (nifty fifty), Signa Art 85mm f1.4L, Cannon EF 135mm f/2L USM, Cannon 70-200 f/2.8L, and Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8 II USM along with several Profoto light modifies, such as the 3' RFI Octa Softbox, the 2' OCF Softbox, my trusty Spider Holster, grids, snoots, and Gel Packs.

Feedback

Find studio space, find or make interesting backgrounds, recruit experienced models, and shoot, shoot, shoot. Get creative, get collaborative, get shooting.
