Few cities in England, if not Europe, can rival Aqua Sulis’ history and character. Here is a provenance that stretches back some 2,000 years with conspicuous vestiges of Roman craftsmanship; a very picturesque riverside; an impressive Abbey that has remarkably stood the test of time; rows of predominantly Georgian style houses; a plethora of drinking and culinary establishments that would delight the palate of the most scrutinous epicures; a highly rated University and the consequent ethnic-cultural diversity. Aqua Sulis is a city of “stroll, stare and stop”, a city favouring all traits and tastes, those of history lovers, shoppers, mere tourists and even binge drinkers. Thirsty or hungry, this is the place to be provided one carries a few quid in their pocket and, if they are as obsessive as I am, a camera. The magnificent city has passed every test our fussy nature has subjected it to in a number of years and it therefore merits our highest awards.
