Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken along the Luskville Falls Trail which is apart of the Gatineau Park trail system in Quebec, Canada. It was my first time on the trail so I was taking all the pictures I could of every! This random shot ended up being my favourite of the day!

Time

This shot was taken on our way back down the trail so at this point in the day the sun had begun to make its way towards the horizon. This allowed for the sun light to hit the leaves and water just right which helped brighten the colours of the leaves. I don't have the exact time but if I remember correctly it was roughly around 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

Lighting

This shot was pure luck to be honest! It was a random shot that I didn't think would turn out great but the sun light ended up hitting everything just right. I would be lying if I said any of it was intended though! A happy accident but sometime they make for the best shots!

Equipment

My current go-to camera is a Fujifilm X-S1 and the lens on this camera is non-removable so I use the stock lens. For this shot no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

My passion is for the outdoors, it is where my heart lives. Every time I go out for a hike or camping I am always looking for new and exciting shots to share my passion with others. This photo was taken during mid Fall so the leaves were still in full colour changing mode. Between the shape of the stream, the hillside and the leaves, I was drawn to this spot. Fall is most certainly my most favourite season of the year and this shot is a perfect example why!

Editing

I never used to do any post-processing of my images because I was always one of those people who believed that their shots should always be natural and unedited. That was until I discovered Adobe Lightroom and began to play around with a few of my pictures and realized how much you can transform your shots and make them become something you never expected. Now I almost always do some form of post-processing with all my shots, from minor touch-ups to full blown colour pallet swaps. With this shot I believe I applied the Turquoise & Red Pre-set and then applied some minor tweaks here and there to make the colours pop without being too saturated and unrealistic. I would definitely recommend to any beginner photographers to use some sort of post-processing program. It will bring you photos to a whole new level!

In my camera bag

As mentioned before, my current go-to camera is my Fujifilm X-S1, I have other older cameras but I never really use them anymore. I almost always bring my camera with me when ever I am doing something outdoors. However, if I am going out to intentionally get some good shots I will pack my NexTech tripod, it is nothing fancy but it gets the job done and I have also been messing around with a LensBall lately, so I sometimes bring that along too. The newest toy in my arsenal is my DJI Spark Drone. It is something I hope to master using in the future and bring my shots to another level (literally), but for right now it is purely experimental and something I am having fun trying!

Feedback

Overall the shot is very simple, what makes it stand out is the colour contrast and the landscape. If you are aiming to shoot something similar then you will have to start with the right season, the fall is a great time for contrasting tree colours and colours you are not going to see any other time of the year (at least where I live in Canada). Something to try out is the angle at which you are taking your shot. The average personal tends to take there shots standing up and eye level; aim hire or lower, don't be afraid to kneel, lay down in the dirt or climb up on a rock or ridge to see everything from a whole new and interesting point of view. If your camera has an adjustable display screen then use it! You don't always have to be looking through your view finder and it always you to place your camera in places you may not be able to fit or reach. I mentioned initially that this shot was pure luck, I just happened to be walking down the trail and thought that this area might make for a good shot, I took a few quick snaps from different spots and moved on. It wasn't until I got home and after some post-processing that I realised how much of a beautiful shot it actually was. So don't be afraid to experiment, take pictures when you normally wouldn't, shot places you normally don't, the only way to evolve and learn is to try new things and experiment!
