Location
This photo was taken along the Chicago (IL) Lakefront at the Monroe St crossing.Time
This is at sunrise. Anyone living in Chicago knows the weather can change at the drop (or blowing) of a hat. But if you catch the morning calm, you can capture the Chicago lakefront and Lake Michigan in its glory.Lighting
I planned this out knowing I was going to be in this spot for some time. I started taking photos just before the sun broke through the horizon. I kept clicking away as the sun started to rise into the clouds.Equipment
This was taken on a Nikon D3200, Sigma 70-200mm lens mounted to a tripod. A remote clicker was used to prevent shake.Inspiration
I grew up in Chicago but moved out to the western suburbs before I started my free-lance photography hobby. Once I moved back downtown, I knew two things I wanted to get pictures of; the blue hour and the golden hour. This is one of the times and photos.Editing
Post processing consisted of the removal of two boat buoys and two or three seagulls. I debated keeping them in the photo but they were more of a distraction than a focused favorite. Other than that, a minor crop and dehazing to rid some of the morning fog.In my camera bag
Today, I shoot Sony and keep it relatively simple where I just grab my bag and go. I shoot the Sony A7Rii with an extended battery grip, two kit lenses and a Rokinon 50mm fixed. I also have two macro attachments if I decide to get up close with nature. Other than that, cleaning equipment, cards, charging cables and five batteries fill out the case. No need for a flash up to this point.Feedback
Take your time. Find your spot first and then come back to take the photo another day. Don't rush into sunrise or sunset photos. If you just want to go for it, at least do your research for the weather and see where others have captured photos of what you are looking for. Make this your project, enjoy the research, anticipate the timing and collect the captures!
