Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my studio, when we were located in Texas.

Time

I took this photo in the late morning. I try to schedule newborn photo sessions for the mornings because babies are usually sleepiest and most content in the morning!

Lighting

I had beautiful window light in my studio, which is what I used for creating this photograph.

Equipment

I believe I used my Canon 5DMiii and 24-70 L series lens to take this photograph; those are my workhorses!

Inspiration

I love to get images of parents with their new little one when doing newborn sessions; they are so tiny and they grow so quickly. Seeing a photo of how small they are at this moment brings back that memory. Because it does change so quickly, it's easy to forget how truly tiny they were when they were brand new.

Editing

I used photoshop to smooth out the baby's skin a little bit, and then I ran a black and white action from Jessica Drossin's Monotones collection to complete the postprocessing and make this photo a black and white.

In my camera bag

I normally have extra batteries, memory cards, a Canon 100mm L series macro lens (one of my favorites!!!), a Canon 50 mm 1.2 L series lens, a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L series lens, and my workhorse - the 24-70mm 2.8 L series lens, my camera, a 5DMiii, a microphone that attaches to the top of my camera, and sometimes my flash (Canon 580 exii).

Feedback

Photographing babies can be a little difficult, if you are trying to pose them. Make sure that you feel calm and confident, and try to make your clients as calm and confident as you can, because babies can sense when you are anxious or unsettled - they will feel unsettled, too. Be patient and don't try to rush things - or force them; there is a difference between the baby starting a bit when moving into a new position and them being uncomfortable! As for the set up of the lighting, pay attention to how the light is falling on your subjects. I like to have the shadows to create a bit of drama to my images; flat broad lighting doesn't give it as rich of a feel.
