I took this photo in Defuniak Springs in the Florida panhandleTime
It was evening, around 6 pm when I was hunting for a place to have dinner.Lighting
It was dark and dreary. Hurricane Harvey was on the way. I had planned this beach getaway weekend and ended up with a hurricane closing in!Equipment
Canon t5i handheld with my 18-135 lensInspiration
My beach weekend was overtaken by Hurricane Harvey so I spent a lot more time exploring the town than I planned. It was dark and overcast and stormy but it fit the mood of the older, rundown main street in this little town. It was Saturday night and pretty much everything was closed. I couldn't find a place to get food so I wandered the town taking pictures of the old train stations, storefronts, and other leftovers from busier times. I fell in love with this old clock. First National Bank is long gone as is the glory days of this and many other small towns. I shot the clock from many angles but this one, with the faded wall advertising the old mercantile story, was my favorite. It just captures what I felt wandering around Defuniak Springs and so many other small towns in America.Editing
The storm and the empty feeling on Main Street just said black and white to me. I also blended the image with a black textured background image to age it further and capture the feeling of wandering an empty downtown while waiting on a hurricane. In my camera bag
I carry my single camera body, a 55-250 lens, 50 mm prime lens, 18-135 lens, extra batteries, flash, Gary Fong hood for my flash, my ipad and a set of filters.Feedback
Shoot your subject from different angles until you find just the right one. I knew I wanted to capture the mood on Main Street that night and originally thought that the empty storefronts on the other side of the clock would do that best but when I walked around and played with different angles and backgrounds, I felt like the faded and damaged advertisement better captured what I was seeing and feeling. Don't be afraid to play with different effects to get the mood you want in the photo either.
