Behind The Lens
Location
I captured this photo during one of my trips to South Coast Botanic Garden. This garden is one of my favorite local gardens to explore in the LA area.Time
When I explore different botanical gardens, I like to get there right when they open so I can make sure they're not too busy. On this day, I must have walked around the garden for about 3 hours when I finally decided it was time to leave. As I was heading back to the main gate, I spotted these beautiful flowers with butterflies fluttering all around them. Even though I was tired, I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity. I pulled out my camera and this photo was the result!Lighting
The sun had just started to come out from behind the clouds when I was on my way out the garden, so I was worried about the harsh sunlight on the flowers. Thankfully with the right angle and a little help from Lightroom, I was able to make the photo work.Equipment
This photo was taken on a Nikon D5500 with a 55-300mm lens.Inspiration
I love exploring botanical gardens and arboretums on the weekends. I love seeing all the different types of flowers and the different wildlife. It's very calming to just take a stroll through the gardens.Editing
Between the different colors of the flowers and the color of the butterfly, I really wanted to photo to pop. So as far as post-processing, I really just played around with making sure the scene was vibrant and colorful. Because of the time of day, I also had to adjust the highlights and exposure levels. In my camera bag
I always keep my Nikon 18-300mm lens on hand for my nature adventures. I never know how close I'll be able to get to a flower or the wildlife. My 60mm prime micro lens is also amazing for getting those detail shots of the flowers or insects. And last but not least, my botanical garden membership card to make sure I get my member access and discounts! Lol.Feedback
One of the main things I try to think about when I go out to shoot is the time of day. I try to go out when the light won't be as harsh on the flower petals. I mean, there are a lot of things you can do with post-processing but I figure I try to make it one less thing I have to worry about.
