The Dirty Devil River in southern Utah, is runnable only in the spring, and not just any spring. Only one that follows a particularly wet winter. And even when it's considered "runnable", the boats have to be small and with a shallow draft. Although the river looks wide, you can see in this image its shallow nature that had us out of our boats and dragging them across sand bars rather than in them and floating. Nonetheless, even after 10 days of floating and dragging, the stupendous beauty of the sheer canyon walls, the enchantment of the side slot canyons and the complete isolation of its wilderness made the Dirty Devil River epic in our experience.
