Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the middle of my kitchen at home, with the help of two dining room chairs.

Time

I took it in the evening during the winter so it was quite dark outside. Even so, I switched all the lights off and closed the blinds.

Lighting

The use of the dark room was to create an ideal atmosphere because I find darkness easier to interpret as peculiar. I had a light shining down on their faces to make their expressions visible.

Equipment

This picture was not really planned, I just grabbed my sisters and my phone, thought about how I wanted the photo to look and took it. I used my phone (BLU 5.5) to take the picture. I also used a torchlight to get the right lighting.

Inspiration

Prior to taking the picture, I had it in my mind that I wanted to create a peculiar photograph that inspired emotion. I am incredibly fond of taking pictures that can be interpreted in many ways. This photograph of my sisters was inspired by my intention to encapture deep emotion.

Editing

I increased the exposure, reduced the contrast and made the picture black and white. I just thought of altering the picture to make it look 'cool' (to me) rather than professional.

In my camera bag

I usually am found with my Nikon Coolpix L330 camera however my interest in photography started when I was 13 and took and edited pictures on my phone so sometimes I carry my phone along too. I don't really use many lens but I am getting more accustomed with my camera and have started researching about photography equipment that I can use to better my photos.

Feedback

Children are reasonably hard to capture as they get bored easily so I recommend having food nearby and or photographing children that you can somewhat control (for example siblings). I found that having my sisters sit down was easier as they were not complaining as much and we're also the same height. I had to experiment with a few different positions and shapes before taking this picture and one thing I would do differently is think about the positions as well as the expressions before asking two children to sit in the dark for 25 minutes! Also I had to have a light to make their faces easier to see so it was hard to hold it while trying to take a picture on a phone without a stand. So I recommend using a camera and a stand and having someone to help you. Next time I do something like this, as I am just 15 I would have my mum present to assist me. In addition I had to see which angle is best for the light so that I could get as much of their features shown as possible. This resulted in me holding the light around 50cm and 45 degrees from the top of their heads. The younger of the two did keep questioning why I wanted to take a picture of her with a 'sad face' but she seemed to like the end result!
