Behind The Lens

Location

Taken in Jasper, Alberta. While out site seeing and coming back into town. He walked down a steep slope to the roadside and just stood there allowing us to converse with him and for me to take pictures.

Time

We were out site seeing on some back roads in Jasper and were on our way back into town. The day had been cool but sunny and as soon as we got back to town limits it started to snow. This buck was coming down a steep embankment towards town. He stopped a few times to mark his territory and to keep an eye on us. We were in a jeep and gave him lots of room and relative privacy. He stopped beside the jeep so i could take some pictures.

Lighting

I always use natural lighting. I do not edit my photos. I like to use what nature gives me. The snow was falling at a nice pace and this fine fellow seemed to enjoy being talked to and having his picture taken. A few females were up the road behind us and he was keen to see where they were going, but not in a hurry to chase them.

Equipment

I had my Fujifilm camera set on sports mode and I shoot through the view finder.

Inspiration

We had never been to Jasper. Canada has some of the most amazing wildlife and landscapes. We (as Canadians) tend to live in more harmony with nature. He came down the embankment and we were in awe of this beautiful boy.

Editing

I never edit my shots

In my camera bag

With my Fujifilm I never had to carry equipment. I just had to be fast with the settings so that I could reap the most from shots and opportunities.

Feedback

Be patient, be quiet. I find animals can be wary of a camera maybe because of the the black circle and an association with a gun. I talk to them and usually put my hand close to the lens so they see flesh and not just a black circle
