Behind The Lens

Location

New Hope, Pennsylvania. This historic town lies along the Delaware River in scenic Bucks County. Old No. 40 is the main attraction of the New Hope RR. Built in 1925 this steam engine pulls several passenger cars through the local hills and fields.

Time

This photo was taken at 12:10 in the afternoon. (on the weekends the steam engine leaves the station at noon) This trestle is located just off the road, which made it easily accessible.

Lighting

Taken at mid-day the sun was high and offering god contrast

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Samsung NX500 f9, 1/250 with a 24mm prime lens.

Inspiration

I've always loved this old engine. Fascinated with it's billows of steam and sound of the wheels rolling down the track. This area of Pennsylvania is known for it's scenic countryside and a favorite spot to watch the fall folliage change color.

Editing

Editing took place in Lightroom. Very little was done to photo. Just de-saturated it, bumped up the dehazing and added a little contrast

In my camera bag

The bag I tote for general use usually holds my Samsung NX1 a 20mm f2.8 prime, a 45mm f1.8 prime and a vintage Leica 90 f4. A fourteen inch tripod that expands to 3 feet, extra batteries, sd cards and a folding reflector.

Feedback

Scout your route for the best vantage points. Prior to the shot, I rode the rails many times, making notes of where the best back drops were, where the trestles and bridges were as well as how to access those areas without treading on private property.
