Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is an inspiring view from an observation hide in the Atlantic Rainforest in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It overlooks the rainforest at the the reserve (REGUA) and BrasilKirin's small reservoir.

Time

My photo was taken midmorning. The tower-hide is a 40 minute walk through the forest and I like to go in the morning before it gets too hot and enjoy the view. Then when my tummy starts grumbling and disturbs the peace it's time to head back for lunch.

Lighting

Every time I come to this tower the view is slightly different. This time the light clouds created shadows over the hills and forest bellow and I've always found that interesting for a photo. I think it emphasizes the curves of the rolling hills and gives a better impression of the distance between me and the horizon.

Equipment

I only used my canon point and shoot camera. I didn't mess about with the settings too much and I didnt edit the photo afterwards. There are some views which are so perfect by nature that don't need editing. I simply leant on the ledge and zoomed in and out till I got everything I wanted into the shot.

Inspiration

I often visit this tower-hide and I find it greatly inspiring and I can spend ages looking out at the view and thinking. Sometimes I simply try to work out what I can see - where the road to my house is, where the trails through the forest are... pinpointing happy memories on the "map" in front of me. In this photo I tried to capture how big the world looks and how vast the forest in front of me is. Also I tried to capture the contrast between deforestation and healthy rainforest. You can imagine, looking at this photo, as I can, looking out of the hide, what this vast expanse of land would look like if it was all cattle fields. And at the same time you are reminded how beautiful nature is when it is as it should be.

Editing

I didn't edit the photo at all after taking it. The view is too perfect as it is. Just like we shouldn't edit nature, I didn't feel like I should edit the photo of nature.

In my camera bag

I don't have much photography equipment. I love taking photos but I don't know much and I don't have much money to spend. So I usually just have my camera in it's case in my pocket. Sometimes I take my tripod too. I need my camera most when i go for walks through the forest so usually i carry water, sandwitches and a first aid kit.

Feedback

Photographing nature is different to setting up an artistic scene. The scene is already there and there isn't anything for you to physically change. A scene like this also doesn't change much and once you find it it stays still. So it's different to photographing something like a bird which takes luck, skill, effort and stealth! In my opinion the credit for a photo like this goes to the scene itself. I personally did nothing but spot it and take the photo. All it takes is to see it, appreciate it and capture it as it is.
