Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken overlooking the Bomba Shack in Apple Bay on the island of Tortola.Time
I had just finished work so it must have been shot around 5:00pm. I rushed over to my favorite surf spot with my drone and my surfboard. After seeing the waves and knowing that there wasn't going to be light for much longer I almost forfeited the shot to get in a few more waves...Lighting
I shot the first few test shots with an automatic exposure and the waves were very overexposed. I noticed this right away on the FPV screen and adjusted accordingly. Generally I prefer to shoot in auto mode so that I can pay more attention to flying the drone but it's important to take notice. Flying and safety it always a priority.Equipment
This was shot with a DJI phantom 3 Pro.Inspiration
I initially wanted to get a shot of a surfer in a wave but due to the lighting conditions I could quickly see that it wasn't going to work so I decided to look for something a little different. After tilting the lens down and noticing the consistency of the waves on the FPV screen I knew I wanted to capture the shot in thirds. I adjusted my hight and followed the coastline to find a point of interest. The famous "Bomba Shack" seemed obvious but it lacked something. When I saw the bright yellow speed bump lines in the road that was it for me. I snapped the shot and had an epic surf session, grateful that I had taken the extra few minutes to capture this image.Editing
There were very few edits in post required for this shot. I added some vibrancy adjustments and a teal/orange LUT.In my camera bag
I usually carry a Canon T6i with an assortment of lenses. My two favorites are probably a 10-20mm and my 50mm prime. I still have my Phantom 3 pro but my Mavic Pro gets to travel with me on a more regular basis.Feedback
If the image you went to capture doesn't work out for some reason, take a few minutes to look for something that you didn't plan for. There's always another angle or subject. Take a little time to compose your shot. Drones are amazing to capture unique landscapes but what can set your photo apart is taking the time to adjust your altitude and position to compose your image in a unique way.
