The photo was taken in Herring Cove near Ketchikan in Alaska (September 2017). After seeing black bears in the forest we headed back to the visitors centre and were pleasantly surprised to see a bird rescue centre. This bald eagle was being cared for there - as the tour moved on I hung back and the eagle turned its head to follow people giving me this lovely profile shot.Time
It was early afternoon but the day was overcast and provided a lovely even lightLighting
I was just fortunate that the eagle had settled on a perch in full daylight. Ann overcast sky provided a uniform lighting.Equipment
At the time I was using a Sony mirrorless A6000 and still had my SEL55210 on from the forest allowing me to zoom in and use the minimum aperture (f6.3) at this timeInspiration
We had seen many bald eagles on our tour but this was the first opportunity to capture a close uoEditing
None requiredIn my camera bag
Since that photo was taken, I have upgraded my camera body to a full frame Sony A7ii and expanded my lenses. In my bag now are are 3 Sony lenses - a 16-35mm f4 Zeiss from Sony (SEL1635z), my go anywhere take anything (almost) 24-240mm f3.5-6.3 Sony lens (SEL24240) and a Sony 50mm f1.8 (SEL50f1.8). My most recent acquisition is the Sigma 70mm F2.8 DG Macro Art Lens which has introduced me to the joy of macro photography. I also carry a few accessories like a Circular Polarising Filter, lens cleaners, spare batteries and SD cards.Feedback
Alaska is full of Bald Eagles but to get a close up like this you'll either need a very long, very fast lens or will need to visit some sort of bird sanctuary
