Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a lake next to my city. When I started to photograph people for the first time, I photographed them mostly outside. I love natural light, so that's why I still prefer going outside for a good shot.

Time

Yeah, that's really the interesting part of this image in my opinion. Through it's black and white grading, you cannot really tell at what time it has been made, right? But maybe the soft light in the face and the rim light from behind give you a little hint: The picture was taken in the afternoon to evening, shortly before the sun goes down. The light at that point was amazing.

Lighting

I love sunsets. Especially when there are crazy cloud formations so you think you are dreaming or something like this. The colors are ridiculous warm and changing so fast because the sun goes down in a rapid way. But, sometimes, for my taste it is too colorful. I am a guy who also love the dark and mysterious. So thats why I mostly grade my pictures in that way. That's also the reason, why I decided to put this in black and white. Also the focus now is on the face and doesn't get distracted from disturbing colors. The light looks really balanced, thats what I really like putting it in desaturated colors.

Equipment

The picture was made on a Fujifilm X-Pro 1 with a solid 35mm f/2 wr lens. It was one of my first experience with that camera and of course the day, I felt in love with Fujifilm X- Cameras. Since that, I am only shooting on Fujifilm and it still is the best, I have ever owned. I also used a reflector which I tried to handle in my other hand while I was trying to shoot with one hand. That was a really nice shooting though.

Inspiration

That's a good question. I think all I wanted was a lake shot with a beautiful woman in it, posing in an elegant and mysterious way. Before I went for this, I saw some really nice, dark mooded shots on pinterest, and I absolutly wanted something like this. The result is not near the pictures I saw in the internet, but it was a worth shooting at all, finding my own style to shoot.

Editing

The only post-processing I made where the black and white filter. I like to let my pictures as natural as possible, because I want to picture out the reality, not a casted freak show with skin tones looking like plastic figures.

In my camera bag

Depends on what I am going to shoot. But lets say a Fujifilm XT2, a 12mm Samyang for Landscapes, a 35mm f/2, a 16-50mm and a prism for portraits, maybe a speedlight, and last but not least a tripod - and I am ready to go for almost everything.

Feedback

Always be kind and gentle to your subject, try do not be so tense and you will see, everything is going to be fine. Use the morning or the afternoon hours for a soft and good light, especially if you want to have nice shadows which creates really dynamic shots in black and white. Try to shoot your subject only with your camera in first glance. It will force you to change your position but also takes you to interesting perspectives.
