Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Babcock State Park, in West Virginia. The Glade Creek Grist Mill is probably the most photographed structure in West Virginia.

Time

I'm not an early riser, but I made an exception to get this image. I was up at 5:30AM, and was at the location about 1/2 hour before sunrise. It wasn't until about 7:30 that the light seemed to be best. It was taken on October 22, 2010.

Lighting

I wanted the warm morning light to accentuate the Fall colors. The thin clouds provided very soft, even lighting.

Equipment

This was shot with a Sony A230, with a 70MM lens; effective focal length off 105mm. It was shot at ISO100 for 2.5 seconds at f/16, mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

This was a "bucket list" shot. I had seen images of this mill in brochures and magazines, and wanted to experience it for myself. My wife and I recently returned from a week-long stay, but the park has become too popular for my taste. In 2010 we had the park pretty much to ourselves.

Editing

The only post-processing that was done was basic adjustments to pull out the color and detail from the raw file.

In my camera bag

Since 2010, I have upped my gear substantially. I currently shoot with a Nikon D850, and my go-to lenses are: 11-16MM, 24-70MM, and 70-200MM. I use a Manfrotto 055CXpro3 tripod, and a Hahnel Capture system.

Feedback

If you go to the park, expect a crowd. You'll need to establish your shooting location very early, as there will be many photographers jockeying for position. Have patience, and take several photographs from the same location; you will most likely need to blend images together to get rid of people in the foreground.
