Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is part of a series of shots in my historical archive. They are shots from 1981 when, as a young photography enthusiast, I was looking for what would always be my style in portrait photography.

Time

I remember it was a spring afternoon. The location was a private house and the model was a young girl who found it very funny to pose in the reconstruction of environments and styles of other times.

Lighting

Generally I have always tried to create this type of portraits in ambient light, but in this case, with a strong backlight coming from the window, I used a semi-frontal support flood to lighten part of the shadows and have shutter speeds that I allowed to work without a tripod. In this way I also think I was able to better shape the shadows by making the model's body stand out.

Equipment

As a camera I used a Hasselblad 6x6 with a standard 80mm lens with a maximum aperture of f / 2.8. The black and white film is an Ilford Pan F which I then developed and printed myself.

Inspiration

The inspiration? Surely the intriguing game that the model was able to create with that light and in that environment.

Editing

This photo was born on film and then was scanned to become digital. In general there is no post-production, but perhaps some adjustments to the blacks and shadows have been made.

In my camera bag

Today my equipment consists of a Nikon D750 camera with a 24-70mm f / 2.8, an old Nikkor 85mm f / 1.4 and other Nikkor lenses from my old 35mm equipment. As an everyday camera to carry in my pocket, I use an Olympus E-M10 Mark II with a 14-42mm f / 3.5-5.6. I rarely use a tripod and normally I shoot freehand. I have never loved the flash, but today if I happen to shoot in the studio I use the Profoto D2 and B10 flashes.

Feedback

If I can make a suggestion for taking this type of photo, the first thing is to find a model who likes to play and to establish a good feeling with. The second is to find a location that knows how to create spaces that can be modeled on their own with ambient light at different times of the day and perhaps use continuous support lights to bring out details and give depth to the space.
