Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the balcony of the old apartment my parents had owned when they lived in Albania, their birth country and a country that has given me so much, even thought I live in the U.S. now.

Time

I had gotten so lucky that my sister had mentioned the sunrise, since we had all woken up early to leave for the airport, and I thought it was so beautiful, that even though I only had my iPhone 8 with me at the time, I absolutely needed to capture this moment. I was also incredibly lucky that I had a perfect cross section view of the horizon and the sun so that I could get the glare in this photo, and if I’m not mistaken this was taken at around 6AM on June 28th, 2016

Lighting

The lights outside were originally turned on, and I felt that even though the picture looked great, it would be even better with no light coming from outside, so I actually rushed all the way downstairs that morning just to turn off the lights going around the edge of the outside apartment walls and came back just in time to still capture the gleam of the cross section.

Equipment

This was shot with an iPhone 8 camera, no added equipment.

Inspiration

Had it not been for my sister, I truly would have missed the opportunity to take this photo, or have all the preparation I did to make it look as nice as it did when I took it, so she deserves praise for being one to stop and smell the roses, no matter how late we might’ve been for our flight out.

Editing

The only processing I did to this image was increase the sharpness in the Photos app by about 30, and threw saturation and vibrance both up to about ten, just to give it some extra oomph.

In my camera bag

Normally, I carry a Nikon Z series fc model, mostly due to the fact that as a freelance photographer not yet out of high school and going to college for computer science, I couldn’t procure a better camera than the one my aunt had used for a bit, and lets me borrow for international trips or college visits sometimes. Although, when this picture was taken, all I had was my iPhone 8 in my pocket, and a vision.

Feedback

My advice would probably be just to trust your gut. If you think there is a nice view or a picture to be taken somewhere, even if it doesn’t look great at first, you’d be surprised how just a couple alterations, like blocking the light from somewhere or going behind an alleyway to get a more focused view on something in the sky and things like that can make your photo a million times better than you would’ve thought.
