Port Willunga South Australia. I took this image during my final year of my Diploma course. I have heard some much about the Jetty I thought I would come down and see what the fuss was all about. Capturing this image required waiting until perfect condition were in place clear sky, sunrise and low tide. This day the ocean provided some beautiful colours which made for a good background. I was looking for a point which would draw the viewer to the background, and the jetty posts were the idea, guide for the viewer. My main focus was getting it right in camera, and doing very little post editing. It took me at least 1 month for the weather conditions to be what they were on this day. I did surprise myself on how well it turned out.

I must admit it took me a little to decide how to compose the image. I had learnt alot about seeing instead of looking.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Willunga Beach South Australia.

Time

This is the best photo I have taken. To capture this image, I have to make several trips to Willunga Beach. But it was early in the morning just after sunrise. It was a clear day.

Lighting

The light was natural light from the sun. The lighting brought out the colours of the ocean as well as the colours in the jetty post. I had made several trips to Willunga over several month, Sunset, Midmorning, Mid afternoon, but the lighting was not as amazing as when I took this image.

Equipment

I took this images with a Nikon D7000. Promaster XC-525 Tripod Nikkor AFS 18-55mm f/3.5 - 5.6 Lens

Inspiration

What inspired me to take this photos, was trying to capture it in a way no one else had captured it. It was consider to be a shot to be taken according to my research on places to take photos. At the time I took this, I was doing my Diploma in Photography and Photo Imaging.

Editing

Very little post processing was done on this image, Minor adjustment to highlight, shadows, blacks and whites in adobe lightroom classic.

In my camera bag

When this photo was taken, my kits was: Nikon D7000, Nikkor 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 DX Lens, Nikkor 55 - 300 f/3.5 - 4.5 DX Lens and Promaster XC-525 trip. But today kit is the addition of Sigma 10-20 mm f/3.5 wide angle lens, Nikkor AF 35 - 70 f/2.8 with 35mm Macro, Manfrotto three way pan tilt tripod head, GND 2,4,8 ND 2,4,8 and CPL Filters, Color checker passport, extension tubes.

Feedback

Sometime you have to go back to the same location at different times during the day, to eventually get the shot you like the most. Do not limit yourself to only taking on shot, experiment with different exposure setting. Don't rely on the camera to take the shot. Get of auto and scene mode, and become more creative using the creative modes if your camera has them. Manual, Aperture, Shutter and ISO. Remember the camera captures the shot you create. Also make sure you get it right in camera to reduce the amount of time post processing the image.
