Location
This photo was taken on a week long trip through Iceland in October of 2017. Glacier bay is called Jökulsárlón. This phot was from the southeast bank facing northwest. The bridge and delta combine to make an interesting quadrant with each bank having vastly different photo opportunities.Time
This is my favorite image I’ve ever taken. Iceland in October is unique as the sun never rises much above the horizon allowing for fairly uniform lighting throughout the day. To capture this shot in other parts of the world I would expect to take the photo just before sun down when the sun is about 15-20 degrees from the horizon.Lighting
The colors of the sky were amplified by the water and made the glaciers pop when I looked at scene. I knew I wanted the bridge to separate the upper third of the photo. And the bank running from the south to the bridge to seperate the right third and provide a leading line to the focal point of the ice. The awkward path the sun takes during winter in Iceland made for an exceptional lighting opportunity that would generally not be possible. The colors of a sunset are vastly different than those of a sun rise and this uses a sun rise position to capture sun set colors.Equipment
I’m not sure if I should be ashamed or proud of what I took this photo on. I used my iPhone 7 Plus. Ever since I saw an advertisement for a photographic series done entirely with an iPhone I’ve been obsessed with taking photos with it.Inspiration
This entire trip was about loving nature and the spectacular scenes nature provides. I love water and wanted to capture the feeling I had when we approached this area in our camper van.Editing
I used photoshop express for the iPhone to do some color correction and stabilize the horizon. I believe if you are spending more than a couple minutes in post processing you didn’t let the camera do the hard work for you.In my camera bag
In my camera bag I have my trusty iPhone 7 Plus, a Nikon d3400, a portable flex tripod, a travel tripod, an 18-55 mm lens and a wide angle adapter for it. I always have 3 batteries and usb charging pack for the Nikon batteries (works for the phone too). I have two basic filters (uv, cfl) that I always use. I have a telephoto lens that is usually the first thing to get left behind if I am trying to save space. I think telephoto lenses are over used. I prefer landscape scenes and find the telephoto restrictive. When I do action shots or animal shots I prefer the telephoto in my bag. Bottom line is have a plan for what you are bringing. If you know when you want to use each item then bring it along.Feedback
Be patient, and explore the scenery around you. This photo came from the fourth spot my group stopped at in this area. It would have been easy to be happy with a photo from any of the other three banks but they did not have the same feeling as this one. Keep exploring and keep shooting, learn what you like in a photo and take those techniques to your shoot.
