Location
Katlyn was getting married at Two Rivers Mansion in Nashville. This shot was at a window on the second floor, just outside of the rooms where her and the bridesmaids had been getting ready.Time
It was a 3pm wedding in mid-October. We wanted to get most of the 'non-family' shots out of the way prior to the service, so this particular round of shots was taken between 1 and 2pm.Lighting
We had a fantastically beautiful (and unseasonably hot) fall day, so the light coming through the window was perfect. This was my first "professional" shoot in over a decade, and my first with a digital camera. I prefer natural light, finding flashes remove mood for me.Equipment
This was my first digital shoot, having been a film shooter for decades. I started my digital journey with a Nikon D3200 and a 55-200mm Nikkor lens, though this may have been the 18-55 kit lens in this shot.Inspiration
Katlyn is my niece. When her dad came to me about shooting the wedding, I wanted to make sure that what I gave her would reflect the memories she would want to keep of that day. Everyone knew that I had never shot a wedding, or done any real shooting in a while. I wanted to highlight Katlyn, the dress, and the location.Editing
I had started using Adobe Lightroom about the same time I went digital. I was, by no means, an expert in Photoshop, so Lightroom's simplicity really helped. I did mostly minor adjustments for white balance, and the exposure you see is nearly identical to what came out of the camera, though I'm sure I tweaked the vibrance level a bit. This version of the image is probably the first of many different edits I've done on this image. In my camera bag
Today I carry a Nikon D810 with an 85mm and a 200mm full frame lens. I travel light, so I don't typically carry anything else, other than some cleaning gear. Occasionally I'll pack a travel tripod with a remote trigger, especially if I know it'll be low light.Feedback
I just wanted to create some beautiful memories for my niece. I tried to think outside of all of the traditional shots, to create something a little more unique, just like she is. My advice, for anyone shooting a wedding, is to remember that this is their special event. You can (and should) shoot all of the "expected" shots, but look for those opportunities to do something completely unexpected and different. Those are the shots that they (and you) will treasure forever.
