Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my backyard in South Salem, New York. The house was high on a hill with amazing vistas. I'd grown accustomed to the most wonderful sunsets, but that evening the light was magical.

Time

The photo was shot in October at 5:48pm.

Lighting

I've seen a lot of sunsets, but the light that night was breathtaking.

Equipment

The photo was shot with my 5D MarkIII, Canon 24-70mm. No flash or tripod.

Inspiration

I was driving home from a shoot in NYC & as I was driving near my home the sun was setting. I had my portrait gear with me, so I wanted to get home to shoot with my other lenses. I shot about 25 images, but this one was my favorite

Editing

I did a little post processing, but not much. I edited with Lightroom. I played with shadows & lightened up the image a bit to bring out the color & light.

In my camera bag

I always have one of my Canon 5D's. Since I work primarily as a portrait photographer I usually pack my sigma 85mm 1.4 art lens and my 50mm 1.2. I love the 85mm. When I shoot corporate events I pack two bodies - Canon 5D MarkIII & MarkIV. I always have the 50mm 1.2, Canon 16-35, Canon 24-70 2.8, Canon 70-200 2.8, a two time extender, monopod, flash & small light with stand.

Feedback

I like to think that having a good eye is critical, but luck plays a tremendous part in getting this type of image. Just being in the right place & having equipment you're comfortable using makes it happen.
