Elephant poaching has been on the rise recently despite a ban on international trading of ivory.
Botswana is one of the few countries left who put the lives of the animals before the poachers, with their shoot to kill policy. It is no wonder that they have the highest number of elephants in the world.
Chobe game park is home to over 60 000 African elephants who have the very rare opportunity to live, as close as possible, to a natural life.
This picture was take on the Chobe river which belongs to the national park. The elephant is one of many who take a walk across the river to seek refuge from wild cats on the mainland. This only happens during the dry season as the park is part of the inland wetlands and in the months of December through to May the islands along the river are completely flooded, an amazing fete for a southern African area.

It is heartbreaking to think that generations to come may never get to experience the graciousness of these amazing creatures!
