Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in London when I went to see an exhibition at the Tate Modern. Fujiko Nakaya had flooded the South terrace with mist to create a evocative piece of work, an homage to the great London fog.

Time

This was during the middle of the day. It was unusually sunny - for London - and we were enjoying the good weather when we entered the South Terrace of the Tate which was in the shade of the new modernist Blavatnik extension. The shade from the building added to the eeriness of the fog and resulted in a chilling composition.

Lighting

Luckily the mist created an amazing backdrop so I didn't need to do anything with lighting. There's an element of naturalness about it which is ironic as the mist has been generated specifically for an exhibition.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon EOS 60D with a 18-55mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I'm always drawn to the weird and wonderful aspects of life. In my head this looked like such a compelling picture that I couldn't miss an opportune moment such as this to capture it.

Editing

I rarely touch my photos during post-processing. I like the simplicity of a moment caught. With this image, I played around with the contrast until I reached a desired effect.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Fujifilm TX-2 in my bag. It's such a versatile camera with great lens and functionality.

Feedback

Always have your camera ready. You never know when an opportunity might present itself to be caught!
