Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a restaurant. We planned to meet there to discuss where to take pictures, and we ended up just doing it right there.

Time

Evening time.

Lighting

The patio was really beautiful, and had these gorgeous string lights that I knew I wanted to have in the background. Other than that, it was just lighting from the setting sun.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D810 with the Nikkor 85mm 1.4. Nothing other than those two items.

Inspiration

It was actually a very personal thing for me. After my four year old son's type one diagnosis, I did nothing but obsess over his sugar and food. I didn't leave the house, and I quit taking pictures. Someone mentioned to me, 'When was the last time you took a picture?" I pretty much immediately called my friend, and asked if we could take pictures as soon as possible. She said, "My hair will be natural, is that ok?" Her hair is what made me love the photos so much

Editing

I used Lightroom for what I call my "clean edit" and then Photoshop for the rest. This photo didn't need much. Her hair was glowing from the setting sun, and bokeh effect was done in camera.

In my camera bag

I keep my D810, 50mm f1.8, 135mm f2, 85 f1.4. Then I keep a separate film camera with two manual lenses and extra film. Its loaded with batteries, memory cards, prompt cards, fairy lights, a reflector, and probably a lot more.

Feedback

Just have fun doing what you're doing, and get it as close in camera to what you want. We had a good time... we would eat an appetizer, discuss spots around the restaurant, then go shoot there, then back to eat our food. We had a ton of people staring at us, (we had manager approval), but neither of us cared, and I was really happy with the outcome.
