Behind The Lens

Location

My friend and I LOVE to swim in a sheltered tide pool up on the Northshore of Oahu. On the day I took this photo, the tide was real low and I had my camrera out in front of me as I approached the shoreline with the water got shallower and shallower . Not sure who was more surprised as I went by these rocks in about 8 inches of water. Wasn't even sure I had actually gotten off a few shots as I immediately stood up and back away.

Time

As I am so not a morning person, the majoirty of my photography starts in the afternoon and goes into the evening. Shooting at night under water is awesome, however, this is just another afternoon in Hawaii.

Lighting

Afternoon light in the water is the best to me. It slants through and lights up this totally majical world with suffused golden highlights.

Equipment

Seriously, my point and shoot Olympus Tough. It does an amazing job underwater.

Inspiration

Sheer Panic and my body is wired for hitting the shutter! This was totally an unplanned shot and the best of the day.

Editing

I absolutely hate spending time in post. Takes me away from the outdoors! Consequently I try to get as much as possible right in camera. On the Olympus Tough 5, I shoot in RAW, and use the underwater icon or Aperature priority. About the most I did to this shot was straighten a bit and change the white balance a bit.

In my camera bag

My go to Camera that's always ready to rock and roll is my Canon 70D with my Tamron 18-270. I find that the len's versatility more than compensates for all the other lenses in my arsenal. If I'm feeling like a challenge, I pick up one of my other lens and just shoot with it.

Feedback

Never turn the camera off until you are back in the car. I think it's the Girl scout in me- Being ready for whatever pops up is how to get some great shots, whether its a sudden pod of dolphins the ocean or your neice making a face when she try's to catch a wave. That and just shoot, shoot shoot.
