Location
This photo was taken from Kitsilano Beach on English Bay in Vancouver British Columbia, CanadaTime
My home is about 35 miles from where I took this picture. It was a long weekend and I had the Monday off so being Sunday I decided to drive into Vancouver and take pictures as I do one or two days each weekend. I had a quick bite of dinner at a drive in and headed off to the beach it was almost 7 pm.Lighting
Last August we had significant forest fires throughout the inland sections of our province which in most cases were hundreds of miles away. The smoke from these fires eventually made its way out to the coast. The haze you see that is slightly obscuring the two freighters in the background is actually smoke. Normally I would have sat on the beach and waited for the sunset and the ensuing blue hour that follows.Equipment
I used my now "other camera" a Canon EOS T5i mated with a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM, hand held. I have since upgraded within the crop frame (APSC-format) family to the Canon 80D.Inspiration
When I arrived at the beach I almost turned around and headed home because the smoke was so bad I couldn't see the other side of English Bay or our coastal mountains. Despite the smoke, I parked the car and grabbed my gear and walked down to the beach with the intent of taking close range photographs. I sat down on some driftwood (Log) and looked out and saw this picture emerging. The sailboat initially wasn't in this position so I waited and hoped that he would move into the position that matched the composition I imagined.Editing
Very little in fact this was the first picture I ever posted for my View Bug. I was in such a rush (not sure for what) that I posted it. I should have fixed it as it required a slight rotation to the right I have since reworked the picture and reposted "IMG_1394-9Lrwm" where I corrected the rotation and fine tuned the picture quality using Lightroom. In my camera bag
I carry a Canon 80D, Lenses: Kit Lenses Canon 18-55mm and 55-250mm, Canon EF 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM, Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM (Favorite Lens), Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM, Kenco tubes for macro work, remote shutter, spare batteries, spare media cards, Lens cleaning supplies.Feedback
The only advice I can offer up is to put yourself out there. Spend the time to visit and revisit spots at different times of the day and seasons. Be patient when you are at your location be aware think ahead and always consider composition, lighting and all the elements that make a picture interesting. I belong to a photography group on Facebook and often people will give me their opinions and advice. Ask for for both it's always good to have a fresh set of eyes looking at your work. Don't be offended by constructive criticism it only makes your work better. That said, remember you don't have to justify your work to anyone, my personal feeling is, I take pictures that make me happy and at the end of the day that's all I care about and if some else likes them that's great !
