Location
I captured this image at the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument near Mitchell, Oregon and an hour south on Hwy.26 from Prineville.Time
I captured this image approx. an hour before sunset.Lighting
Without knowing one would think the sun was directly overhead, actually the sun was behind and to the right of the hill.Equipment
Pentax Camera, Pentax 16-50mm F 2.8 Lens, polorizer filter, tripodInspiration
The beauty of this lone hill, the soft contours the blending of colors in the ash, and the hill's majestic rise to the heaven. what I did notice and worked with were the like shapes of the plant life that rimmed the base of the hillside.Editing

In my pack I normally carry two cameras, a Pentax 24-70 mm F2.8, a Pentax 70-200mm F 2.8, 1 1/4 tele convertor, Tamron 24mm F2.5, Tokina 90mm 2.5, Sigma 400 F5.6, Pentax 500mm F4.5, Manfrotto Tripod, multiple filters.Feedback
I have walked through the valley many, many times and stood before this hill, sunrise through sunset, and what I have learned is at or near sunset, place yourself facing the sun so the hill is backlit. This will soften the contours and allow the blending of colors as there will be neither highlights or shadows to confuse the eye of the viewer. Use a polorizing filter to enhance the colors and most of all, use a long shutter speed to capture the detail along with a slow ISO and an F stop near F16 to F32. Pay attention to every detail that is presented before you, and capture what the scene offers your heart as it is your heart that will show in the final presentation.
