Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Sacramento Zoo. This is Kamal, our male lion.

Time

This was taken in the morning, about 10:30 and he was sitting on his rock and had just roared out a morning greeting.

Lighting

It was good morning light and the lion was facing directly to the folks gathered to see him through the enclosure screen mesh..

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D mark IV and a Canon 100-400mm lens at 400mm and hand held. The animal was behind a large mesh screen, thus the need for the telephoto lens.

Inspiration

I took the photo because he is a great subject, I liked the lighting around his mane and I could capture his eyes.

Editing

Post processing in Lightroom was cropping ad a small amount of exposure reduction and a bit of highlight.

In my camera bag

I only have the one body, the Canon 5DIV and two lens; the Canon 100-400mm L and a Canon 24-105 L lens plus a 1.4 teleconverter.

Feedback

When shooting animals in the zoo, especially through screens, a good telephoto lens at maximum zoom is always a good ide.
