While waking through the forest on a photo hike I stepped off of the path to photograph an interesting leaf on a small tree. As I looked down at my camera to check the exposure i was startled to see this black eastern hognose snake coiled up only a couple of feet away. I stepped away slowly to a more comfortable distance and snapped a couple of shots and then retreated in the opposite direction. Beautiful pattern and texture throughout the snake's length.
