During an evening hike alone the Embudito Trail on the west-facing side of the Sandia Mountains, we were forced to make our way past this angry fellow who sounded his rattle almost incessantly as he hid amid the lichen-crusted rocks. I believe this to be a Western Diamondback.

Thanks so much, Lizzie. I can't remember how close I actually was to this creature, but I'd have to think I wasn't carrying around too powerful a lens because I as hiking in the mountains with a fairly large group of people.
