Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Maui, Hawaii.

Time

I took this photo at dusk. I try to arrive early before a sunset to scout out the area and to see if I can include anything interesting in the photo. On this day, I arrived even earlier than normal and the sun was still pretty high in the sky, behind the clouds.

Lighting

There were a lot of clouds the evening I took this photo. The sun kept moving in and out of sight and I noticed that the clouds were creating interesting sun rays.

Equipment

Nikon D7200, with the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 lens. No tripod, handheld.

Inspiration

i enjoy taking photos of wildlife, birds, and nature in general. Whenever I am anywhere near a sunset, I usually try to capture it with my camera.

Editing

Yes, I straightened the horizon and used the "Fill Light" tool, as well as Brightness and Contrast. I also added to the vibrancy of the photo. I usually don't like to spend a ton of time post processing photos and try to get the shot as I want when shooting.

In my camera bag

Although I still have the Nikon D7200, I recently picked up the Nikon D500 as I enjoy taking photos of wildlife and birds (specifically birds), and birds move very quickly and erratically. I don't like to overpack and bring too much so lately I have been taking the Nikon 16-80mm f2.8 and the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR. I also love taking the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR, which is an outstanding lens for taking hiking (because it is so small and light), and, with the 1.4 teleconverter, great for taking photos of birds.

Feedback

The sun sets very quickly, especially as it approaches the horizon. Be ready to try different settings to get the shot you want, and don't be afraid to take a ton of pictures. When taking sunsets, I often look to include something else in the photo. For example, if on a beach, I try to include a large rock (in the surf) or even some driftwood, to give the photo some balance.
